Pennard Primary School
Admissions
Bae Un - Nursery and Reception Class
We currently have spaces in our amazing Nursery and Reception class - Why not come and take a look!
We pride ourselves in offering a wide and engaging curriculum for our children. Our planning is based on the children's interests and our primary focus is learning through play and exploration. We strive to create a warm and stimulating environment where learning is fun. We engage in activities that promote and extend children's curiosity and awareness of their world, and we encourage children to grow in confidence, self-esteem and independence. Every child receives an enjoyable yet challenging experience, tailored to meet their own individual needs. We feel very strongly about this and communicate regularly with you, as parents or carers, so we can deliver personalised learning suited to your child's development.
Starting school is a very important time for you, your child and the school. In the term prior to their entry, we invite parents to discuss our partnership with you and talk about any concerns you might have. We admit children from the age of three into the Early Years Unit.
Pupils will be admitted to Pennard Primary School in the September of the academic year in which they are five. Reception class pupils’ intake operates on a staggered basis over the first two weeks of the Autumn term.
The Early Years Curriculum is grounded in active learning. Through practical activities, purposeful play and talk, pupils develop an understanding of the world and the basic concepts they will need for their later learning. Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

In Swansea all primary schools provide part-time nursery education for parents who would like their child to attend a nursery class. The policy of the Local Authority is to provide part-time nursery education only. A nursery place will be available for your child from the term following their third birthday although it may not be in the school nearest to your home address. You can submit an application for a place at your catchment school or any other school for which you may have a preference. Parents may wish to visit schools before they make a decision about which school they wish to apply for and visits to school should be arranged directly with the headteacher of the relevant school. The names, addresses and telephone numbers of all schools are on pages 30 – 50 of this book. School websites also provide useful information about schools as does the Welsh Government website My Local School mylocalschool.wales.gov.uk and the City and County of Swansea website www.swansea.gov.uk
The Local Authority administers all applications for nursery places in Swansea and once you have decided which school you would like to apply for you should complete an application form which can be obtained from the Local Authority website or by contacting the School and Governor Team on 636550. If there is not a place immediately available in your preferred school you may have to put your child’s name on a waiting list. You will be offered a place in an alternative school. There is no right of appeal against the refusal to offer a nursery place in a specific school. It is also important to note that children attending the nursery class of a school will not have an automatic right of admission to full time education in Reception at the same school. Parents will need to apply for a place in Reception along with other applicants
Admission Arrangements
The Local Authority is responsible for admissions and the maximum number of pupils admitted to each year group can be 30. This is a statutory requirement. When an application for a placement would result in this figure being exceeded, the application will be refused. However, the applicant may appeal against this decision by contacting the City and County of Swansea, Civic Centre, Oystermouth Road, Swansea, SA1 3SN.
